WHAT IS THE CORE?
When we say “core” what does this mean? Many people may consider the core to be "the six pack", or some muscles working during an abdominal curl. But really, what muscles are they?
The core muscle group are the supportive and stabilizing muscles in our trunk and are used not only during Pilates exercise, but also while performing daily tasks. It's vital that this group is active and engaged to ensure proper form of movement and to prevent injury. The core consists of muscles such as:
the diaphragm,
the transversus abdominis (also known as TrA, not a Harry Potter spell),
the obliques
the rectus abdominis
back extensors, and
pelvic floor.
During your initial private Pilates session, we will teach you how to properly engage and take full advantage of this important muscle group. As stabilizing musculature, it acts as an internal support system for the lumbar spine, providing a solid foundation for proper movement. A weak core can be the result of an injury, physical injury/trauma, chronic pain. A weak core has also been shown to lead to a multitude of compensations, movement dysfunction, and orthopedic conditions/injuries. Either way - core weakness is not permanent: Join us today to learn how to activate these muscles and move BETTER!
