EDS & HSD

Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (EDS) and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder (HSD)

Physical therapy is considered the cornerstone of proper management for Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (EDS) and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder (HSD). A common problem caused by hypermobility is that instability within the joints can alter movement patterns in such a way that muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints can be overloaded and injured. Along with altered movement patterns, the postural adaptations, subconscious habits, and chronic pain of a person can produce a cascade of effects throughout the body, which can increasingly interfere with daily function and quality of life.

The goal of a physical therapy program designed for EDS/HSD is to prevent and reverse the cumulative negative effects of the aforementioned factors, decrease pain and fatigue, improve daily function, and restore or enhance enjoyment of life.

At Stability Pilates and Physical Therapy, we accomplish this by:

Improving:

  • joint alignment and stability

  • movement patterns along the kinetic chain

  • muscle motor control and strength

  • proprioception (the perception or awareness of the position and movement of the body)

  • vestibular function (i.e., balance and coordination of movement)

Identifying and correcting:

  • various types of pain (e.g., referred pain, myofascial restriction pain, MTrP pain, other peripheral nociceptive pains, neuropathic pain, central sensitization)

  • subconscious or unconscious habitual movements

  • postural deficits

Protecting and supporting:

  • vulnerable joints and tissues

  • the central and peripheral nervous systems, including the brain stem

Continuously evaluating:

  • joint alignment, motor control, strength, myofascial systems, and function of other systems

Collaborating:

  • with the patient and the patient's loved ones to develop a focused treatment plan

  • with the patient's medical team to ensure continuity and completeness of care

We understand that many individuals with EDS/HSD may have tried physical therapy in the past with suboptimal results, but at Stability Pilates and Physical Therapy, our physical therapists have a deeply personal understanding of how to thrive through an hEDS diagnosis and have a passion for helping others understand their unique bodies and gain control over their condition.

Our treatment techniques include:

  • Muscle Energy Techniques

  • Joint mobilization

  • Myofascial Release

  • Myofascial Decompression/Cupping Therapy (if indicated)

  • Myofascial Trigger Point (MTrP) Dry Needling

  • Neuromuscular Re-education

  • Movement Re-education

  • Rehabilitation Pilates, progressing as indicated

  • Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation

  • Joint stabilization and protection techniques, including taping, bracing, and mobility aids as indicated.

SEE WHAT PEOPLE HAVE TO SAY ABOUT US!

“The team here is superb. Jessica is extremely knowledgeable and understands how to troubleshoot and remedy issues well beyond the obvious. Not a typical physical therapy practice, one on one with a lot of listening.”

David Favero

“Claire is wonderful! She helped me a lot with my lower back pain. I have also realized that I injured myself at a Pilates studio that does not emphasize classical Pilates. I am going to start doing Pilates at stability again!”

Haley Grove

“Stability has been a lifesaver in my life for almost a decade! I have used them for Pilates, physical therapy, dry needling and massage therapy. The staff is A+ and would do anything to help clients feel their best inside and out!
