Let’s focus on one of the Basic Principles of Pilates!PELVIC PLACEMENTPelvic ImprintSTABILIZING THE PELVIS AND LUMBAR SPINE:

  • 2 positions: Neutral and Imprint
    • Neutral –
      • Small natural curve in low back
      • Pelvis lies parallel to mat without strain in low back
    • Imprint –
      • Engaging the abdominals to flatten the back and tilt pelvis posteriorly
      • Used to ensure stability of pelvis and low back and maintain abdominal engagement

EXPERIMENTING WITH PELVIC PLACEMENTNEUTRAL TO IMPRINT

  • Lying on back with knees bent and feet flat
  • Use the abdominals to tilt the pelvis up toward the ribs, flattening the back into the mat. Make sure you do not push with your feet, or tuck your bottom under
  • Return to neutral by relaxing abdominals
